We are sad to report that Sheryl went to be with the Lord on February 28, 2024, after a gallant six-year battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband of 46 years Matt, and their children Jake and Katelynn, Katelynn's husband Cameron, and her little dog Rocky.
Sheryl was born in Ellijay, Georgia on December 4, 1956, the only child of Ernest and Dimple Davenport. In her youth she was active in 4-H serving as a camp counselor at Camp Rock Eagle. In high school she was selected as a cheerleader for her team- the Gilmer County Georgia Bobcats. After graduating from college, she lived in Dalton Georgia and later in Yorba Linda, California before moving to Orangeburg.
Sheryl loved the outdoors. She was a hiker, bicycler, and downhill skier. She also was a sailor, serving as crew on the fleet championship boat- Sea Dawg. Sheryl once tried her hand at bowling, joining a league of 26 teams with her team winning the championship.
Sheryl spent her life as a teacher. Professionally she taught Language Arts to middle school and high school students. By example she taught everyone she met the ideals of Christ-Friendship and Compassion. She was a past president of the Orangeburg Adult Literacy Council. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Sheryl was a passionate fan of her alma mater- The University of Georgia. Win or lose she supported the Red and Black both home and away. She was always proud of the fact that several of the players were products of her classroom.
She was most happy serving her Church- Saint Andrews United Methodist Church. Her ministries included lay leader, Sunday school teacher, blessing box coordinator and youth library organizer along with serving on many other committees.
Visitation will be held on Monday March 4, 2024, at the Dukes Harley Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00. Funeral service will be held at Saint Andrews United Methodist Church on Tuesday March 5, 2024. at 2:00. She will be laid to rest at 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 7, 2024 at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellijay, GA.
