Obituary

Robert (Bob) Martin passed away Friday, September 16th at the age of 82. He was born the son of Daniel P. and Edna S. Martin in Morristown, NJ, on December 7, 1939. He is survived by his wife Julie (Banks) Martin, son Brian, daughter-in-law Audra, and his two grandsons Leland and Noah. Following graduation from Glenn High School in Winston-Salem, NC in 1958, he attended Ole' Miss pursuing a degree in music education. While attending college he arranged and designed the marching band halftime shows including the 1962 Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Tx. After graduating he returned home and began his career as a music director; teaching at Glenn High School in Kernersville, J.M. Morehead High School in Eden, and Freidland Moravian church. In 1964 he received the National Outstanding Bandmaster Award.

While teaching at J.M. Morehead he met his wife, Julie. Soon after marrying, they moved to Georgia and he found a home teaching band in the Gilmer County schools and directing music at Watkins FUMC. Later he also directed music at Hope Lutheran Church until 2016. In 1996 He opened Take Note Music in Buford, GA, and founded the Take Note Big Band which performed jazz classics at many Georgia venues. After retiring he became the director of the Roswell New Horizons Band. Under his direction, the band flourished and added many members and ensembles. He organized many camps for New Horizons in Georgia and taught at several more around the country.

In addition to his musical endeavors, he was a Cub Scout leader and Packmaster for Pack 402 in Ellijay as well as a baseball coach.

Bob spent more than 50 years making a difference for those around him in everything in which he was involved. He gave his talents and knowledge tirelessly and instilled an appreciation for seeking excellence in those around him.

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 23rd, 2022 at 2:00 pm in the Logan Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dave Smedley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the service hour of 2:00 pm at the Logan Funeral Home. Donations may be made to the Gilmer County Bands c/o Gilmer High School at 408 Bobcat Trail Ellijay, GA 30540.
