Robert Benjamin Freeman, age 88 of Blue Ridge, GA, passed away August 14th, 2023 while surrounded by his loving family. Robert was the only child born to his late parents James Thomas Freeman and Cecil Leona Hawk Freeman of Chattanooga, TN. Robert is preceded in death by his wife of sixty years Cynthia Ann Shanke Freeman and son James Andrew Freeman.
Robert attended McCallie School and Vanderbilt University. Afterwards, he entered the United States Army as a Captain. Following various stations with his young family in Europe and America, Robert served as an officer in Vietnam - an assignment for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in 1966. His subsequent distinguished work and outstanding performance at the Pentagon was cited with an Army Commendation Medal.
After leaving the military, Robert chose a career in banking operations, systems and accounting that primarily based his family in Chattanooga, TN, Dalton and Atlanta, GA. He and his wife shared an enduring love for their family, friends and pets that was stamped with their unique brand of individuality. Both lifelong learners, they instilled a love of reading, art, music, travel, sports and nature in their way of life. In his mid-fifties, Robert developed his talents in woodworking while obtaining both his MBA and CPA. An avid nature and animal lover, he and his wife made their final home in beautiful Blue Ridge, GA.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Suzan and Jeff Underwood of Blue Ridge, GA, son Robert Steve Freeman of Atlanta, GA, and daughter Amy L. Mazzetta of Atlanta, GA, three grandchildren Tito Mazzetta Jr., Giuliana Mazzetta, Robert Worley and one great grandchild William Reynolds.
Services will be held at 11:00, September 16th, 2023 at Logan Funeral Home Pavillon, with Rev. Victor Morgan and the North GA Honor Guard officiating. There will be an interment on a later date at Georgia National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of Robert's favorite charities: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, National Wildlife Federation, Paralyzed Veterans of America, The American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, The Nature Conservancy, Boys Town, and Humane Society of Blue Ridge.
