Obituary

Peggy Joan Overcash Puckett was born and raised in Kannapolis, North Carolina on March 14th, 1937. She was born upstairs to her parents' diner and pool hall. Her family farm was just down the road off Rainbow Drive. She was the youngest of 5 to Arthur Overcash and Ruth Shinn Overcash. She graduated from Brown High School in 1955 . Peggy went on to study at Duke University then graduating from Queens College in Charlotte with degrees in Mathematics and Religion. She married Jerry Ross Puckett in 1958. Peggy has two children Arther Mark Puckett and Sonya Elise Puckett Stockton, daughter in law Sharon Puckett, grandchildren Rebecca Gudicello , Jeremy Puckett, Elise Paul, Kristina Cook and Nicholas Stockton, and 10 great grandchildren. Peggy is preceded in death by her daughter Sonya Stockton.

Peggy and Jerry moved to Georgia where she would teach high school math. Peggy was honored in several yearbooks and newspaper articles as a dedicated teacher. Peggy retired from teaching in 1982 and went to work for Delta Airlines as a computer programmer. After retirement, Peggy moved from Decatur Georgia to Ellijay GA. She devoted her time to Methodist churches of Ellijay Georgia. Peggy became an ordained minister in 2002 and went on to pastor Oak Hill United Methodist Church until 2010.

Peggy was a teacher and woman of faith. She was a good friend and was blessed with many talents. She will be missed dearly and remembered with honor. Rest in peace. We love you.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 2:00 pm. at the 1st United Methodist Church of Ellijay, GA. with Rev. Dr. Mike Shearon and Rev. Alan Tarr officiating. Visitation will be held before service from 1-2pm at the church as well on January 4, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ellijay First United Methodist Church at 75 McCutchen St. Ellijay, GA 30540.
