Obituary

MSG Martin Lester Davis (RET), age 86 a resident of Landshut, Germany, passed on Thursday morning December 22, 2022, surrounded by all of his family in the hospital in Landshut, Germany. Martin L. Davis was born March 11, 1936, in Ellijay, GA to the late Andrew Jackson Davis, Sr, and Wincie Sluder Davis. He grew up and went to school in Ellijay. After high school, he joined the Army in 1953. He completed his basic training in Ft. Benning, GA, and Ft. Bragg, NC. After that he served in Japan, Okinawa, Ft. Still, OK, Germany, Korea, Ft. Polk, LA, and Vietnam. He was seriously injured during the TET Offensive in Vietnam in December 1967. However, he returned to active duty after ten months. Altogether he served honorably in the US Army for 22 years. In 1975 he retired in Germany from active duty but continued working for the US Forces as a civilian in Munich and Bad Aibling, Germany for 20 years. Martin always kept close contact with his family in Georgia. He visited with them as often as possible and enjoyed their visits to Germany. Martin is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Dorothy Davis Hall (Fred), and Dimple Davis Davenport (Ernest), brothers A.J. Davis, Jr (Rachel), Paul William Davis (Christine), and John Henry Davis (Jewel). His son-in-law Robert Scharl.

Martin Is survived by his wife of 57 years Emilie Czycz Davis, two daughters Anita E. Davis Scharl and Tanya S. Clermont, and six grandchildren Laura, Patrick, and Hannah Scharl, Vincent, Clemens, and Matilda Clermont, and also several nieces and nephews survive.

Funeral services were held on January 16, 2023, in the neighborhood Protestant Church and the Chapel of St. Michael Cemetery in Landshut. Music at the services was selected by his granddaughter Laura who also sang in church and at the grave site. The urn was carried to the grave site by a soldier of the US Army and military rites were performed by a US Army delegation from Grafenwoehr. As it is a tradition in Germany, the mourning congregation got together for dinner in a restaurant after the funeral.
