Obituary

Harold Maynard Griggs Jr., age 69, passed away at his home on August 31st, 2024. He was born on February 20th, 1955, in Ellijay, Georgia, to his parents Harold Maynard Griggs Sr. and Erna Lee Sanford Griggs. He was a proud 1973 graduate of Gilmer High School and a 1979 graduate of Brenau College, where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice. Immediately upon graduating, he worked for the Ellijay Police Department. In 1974, he began his career with the Georgia State Patrol as a radio operator. In 1977, he was promoted to Trooper and was a graduate of the 52nd Trooper School. During his time with the Georgia State Patrol, he was sent to different patrol posts across the state including Gainsville and Douglas, Georgia. It was in Douglas in 1995, he was promoted to Sergeant First Class (Post Commander). Finally, in 1996, he transferred to become Post Commander at Post 27 in Blue Ridge, Georgia, which brought him back up to his beloved Gilmer County. He retired in 1999 from the Georgia State Patrol, something he was proud of to his dying day. After retiring from GSP, he became a successful business owner in Gilmer County. Together with his wife Denise, he owned Ellijay Mini Storage and Ellijay Mini Mart until he officially retired from everything in 2018.

Maynard was a member and Past Master of Oak Bowery Lodge. He was also a member of the Coosawattee Shrine Club. He loved his family and friends more than anything. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, cousin, and friend. He loved to travel and exercise. In his younger days, he loved to boat and ride his Honda Goldwing. Maynard was one of the most dependable individuals throughout his life. He had an uncanny way of being able to know what people needed and to help people in their time of need. He was incredibly generous and loyal to all who knew him. He was particularly proud of his daughter, Reagan, and would tell anyone who listened of her accomplishments. He is preceded in death by his parents Harold Griggs and Erna Griggs and his brother John Griggs.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years Denise Stephens Griggs, his daughter Reagan Griggs Pritchett (Kevin), his sisters Elizabeth Petty and Gale Ray, his brothers Herman (Judy) Griggs, Roy (Louise) Griggs, Tim (Sharon) Griggs, his aunt Lemma Sanford, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
