Obituary

Elizabeth Joan (Glynn) "Betty" Sweeney, age 85, of Tucker, Georgia, passed on Friday, June 10, 2022. Betty was born on October 31, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio to her late parents Nicholas and Lillian Jean (Bush) Glynn. Betty, together with her husband Jim, maintained an open-door policy to family, friends, and their children's friends, which garnered a wealth of love and connection to those who knew her. Through a love of tennis, her children's athletics, involvement in community and church, and gatherings of family and friends—with much kitchen table laughter, Betty was very active and engaged throughout her life. Her work in the beloved garden she and Jim shared even caught the attention of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Her affection will live on within all she touched. In addition to being a partner in marriage for 61 years, and mother to 5 children, Betty was also a longtime devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Her working career was as a licensed insurance agent and partner with Sweeney-Harms & Associate. Betty is preceded in death by her husband James Joseph Sweeney and son Daniel Sean Sweeney. Surviving Betty are daughter Peggy Sweeney Duvall, Millwood, Virginia; daughter Rebecca Glynn "Becky" (Sweeney) Bevers and her husband Michael Bevers, Ellijay, Georgia; son Brian Cullen Sweeney and his wife Victoria Sweeney, Savannah, Georgia; and son Patrick Joseph Sweeney, Suwanee, Georgia. Her grandchildren, Jessica Jones, Jillian Lum, James Lum, Matthew Sweeney, Connor Sweeney, Ian Holmes, Joseph Sweeney, Anna Kate Sweeney, Preston Wright, Bailey Bevers, and eight great-grandchildren also survive her. The family will receive friends Monday, June 27, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church at 3773 Chamblee Tucker Rd Atlanta, GA. A memorial Mass will be held on Monday, June 27, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Jude Michael and Monsignor Paul Fogarty officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital https://www.stjude.org/ or Society of St. Vincent de Paul https://ssvpusa.org in memory of Betty Sweeney.
